Why our national team lost at Euro 2012

The past 2012 European Football Championship brought disappointment to Russian fans. Not the strongest group delivered to our national team after the draw, as well as successful play in the last friendly matches before the tournament instilled in the fans optimism.

A draw with the runners-up of last World Cup, Uruguayans, a bright victory over the future finalists of Euro 2012, the team of Italy, led to believe in a successful performance of the Russian team. The result of the first meeting with the Czechs only strengthened hopes, which in the end were not destined to come true.

And meanwhile there were many prerequisites for the failed performance of the national team. Incomprehensible, correspondence consultations on the phone of the specialist on physical preparation, management of the team by the head coach who on the eve of the big tournament announced about leaving the national team, spoke not in favor of our friend.

Dick Advocaat’s overly conservative views on the formation of the team, whose backbone remained unchanged over the years, did not go to the Russian national team’s advantage. New players to the age team were hardly drafted. And after all, in 2018 Russia hosts the World Cup and the national team has already set the highest goals. It’s time for young players to gain experience at the highest level. But how to do that if they’re not even drawn into the team.

The national team did not find a real leader, able at a crucial moment to take the game on itself and lead the team forward through “can’t”. In the decisive game against Greece, our players lacked the will and the coach – tactical skill. Yes, the opponent scored a goal and went into deaf defence. But the Greeks’ defence was not impenetrable, as the German players proved in the quarter-finals.

Dzagoev’s kick and one of Kerzhakov’s many tries were remembered for the entire match. Pointless skating of the ball around and a couple of dangerous moments in 90 minutes of play is too little for the modern team, setting itself the high challenges that the day before the tournament declared with high tribune ex-the head of the Russian football union Sergey Fursenko.
