The history of this music forum began 100 years ago — in 1912. It was then that famous Finnish singer and owner of the beautiful soprano Aino Akte organized the first opera festival, where works of Finnish composers were performed. It was held until the mid-30s, followed by a forty-year hiatus. The festival resumed in 1967 thanks to the operatic arts courses organized as part of this musical celebration. Since then, the festival has become an international cultural event with around 60,000 people taking part each year. And famous soloists of the Finnish National Opera consider the honor to perform here.
Throughout July in Olavinlinna Castle you can hear famous works performed by the best musicians and opera performers – both Finnish and foreign. All operas are heard in the original, and a special electronic scoreboard shows the titles in Finnish and English.
The new program of the festival is an opera singing competition among performers around the world. 20 people are allowed to participate, 6 of whom are selected to compete in the main competition. Finalists earn the right to perform with the Opera Festival Orchestra and cash prizes.
The Savonlinna Opera Festival turns 100 in 2012. In honor of this significant event, all guests will be waiting for a grand anniversary concert, which will leave behind a lot of amazing impressions and bright emotions.
