How the channels shared the broadcast of the London Olympics

Two state TV channels – Channel One and VGTRK – shared TV broadcasts from London in a friendly way. Every day of the Olympics one of them will choose the competitions that he would like to cover, and the next day this right will pass to colleagues. However, there are exceptions in this rule – to show finals of some competitions in Russia “Channel One” has exclusive rights. This applies, for example, to men’s football, men’s and women’s volleyball, tennis tournaments, weightlifting, personal championships in rhythmic gymnastics, etc. But VGTRK on its channel “Russia 2” will start Olympic broadcasts first – this will happen two days before the official opening of games, when the competition in women’s football will begin. The opening ceremony will be shown by Channel One, and the closing of the Olympics – by VGTRK.

On Rossiya 2 channel from July 27 the Olympic news channel will start at 11 o’clock Moscow time and go almost without interruption until three o’clock at night. Channel One plans to show the competition live for at least three hours each day. However, the accepted scheme of division of screenings of competitions between two state TV companies has also an uncomfortable feature for TV viewers. It does not allow companies to make a program of programs for a particular day in at least a few days.

Besides these two TV companies will show the Olympiad on all their channels and NTV. But viewers of the publicly available NTV will only be able to see Olympic news and competition reviews. Live broadcasts from London, supplemented by traditional “analytical get-togethers” for this company, will take up almost all the airtime of NTV’s six pay channels.

In addition to the three domestic TV companies, there will be two European channels in Russian – Eurosport and Eurosport 2.
