Baikal is easiest to get from the nearest city of Irkutsk, which can be reached by plane, train or by car. The flight from Moscow takes 5-6 hours, the railway will have to go about 5 days. If you decide on road travel, remember that the quality of roads deteriorates proportionally to the distance from Moscow, and you will have to overcome about 5 thousand kilometers each way.

Another major city not far from Baikal – the capital of the Republic of Buryatia, Ulan-Ude. By Siberian standards it is very near Irkutsk – only 400 kilometers. You can also get there by plane, train or motor transport.

The easiest route to Baikal from Irkutsk is to take a bus or car to the village of Listvyanka, located at the source of the Angara – the only river, $ stemming from Baikal. The distance is only 60 kilometers. However, in Listvyanka you will not see the true beauty of Baikal – the settlement is too civilized. Yet lack of time causes many tourists to confine themselves to this. However, it is possible to get to Listvyanka by water – from Irkutsk regularly depart vessels on hydrofoils.

Sev in Irkutsk by train or bus, you can reach the village of Slyudyanka and the city of Baikalsk, also located on the shore Baikal. The distance here will be about 150 kilometers, but as a result you will get to the Circobaikal Railway – a unique structure built in the early 20th century. You can walk around it yourself or as part of an excursion.

heart of Baikal called Olkhon Island. The unique nature of the island, its importance to shamanists and Buddhists, incredible scenery – all this makes Olkhon the most popular tourist site of Baikal. You can get to the island only by car or bus, the distance from Irkutsk is about three hundred kilometers.

Ulan-Ude is the easiest to get to the east coast of Baikal. The most attractive places for tourists are Chivyrkuy Bay and Barguzin Bay, where thanks to the distance from civilization you can fully enjoy the beauty of wildlife.

Finally from Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude by rail you can reach Severobaikalsk – a town located in the northernmost part of the lake. However, it is still 2000 kilometers, so Severobaikalsk is not so popular with tourists. And nature there is much harsher.
