Instructions for use of the drug “Zoloft”
At the beginning of the 19th century, doctors prescribed opium patients. The chemical composition of this substance is similar to that of neurotransmitter endorphins. Currently, for the treatment and prevention of depressions of various origins are used a large number of modern remedies, in particular, the patient can be prescribed the antidepressant “Zoloft” (sertraline). It is also used to treat various disorders (obsessive-compulsive, panic, post-traumatic) and sociophobia.
Zoloft is drunk once a day (morning or evening) regardless of food intake. For the treatment of depressions and obsessive-compulsive disorders, the drug is prescribed in the amount of 50 mg per day. In the case of panic, post-traumatic stress disorders and sociophobia, 25 mg of the drug per day are prescribed. This dose in a week is increased to 50 mg.
This pattern of admission allows to reduce the number of unwanted effects that may appear during treatment with the drug. If the effect of “Zoloft” is insufficient, the daily dose is increased. Increasing the amount of the drug is carried out once a week to the highest – 200 mg per day. After achieving the therapeutic effect, a long maintenance dose is selected.
The effect of taking the drug is achieved a week after the start of treatment, the strongest effect appears in 2-4 weeks, and when treating obsessive-compulsive disorders – for a longer time.$
Children and adolescents aged 13-17 years with obsessive-compulsive disorders, Zoloft is prescribed 50 mg per day. Children aged from 6 to 12 years are given the drug in the amount of 25 mg. After a week, the daily dose of “Zoloft” is increased to 50 mg. In case of insufficient therapeutic effect, the amount of the drug increases gradually – 50 mg per week to 200 mg.
Zoloft is used with caution in patients with liver diseases. In these cases, use a smaller amount of the drug or increase the length of time between medication.
Side effects of “Zoloft” drug
“Zoloft” may have the following side effects. From the digestive system may appear abdominal pain, flatulence, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, liver failure, jaundice. On the part of the cardiovascular system, side actions are manifested by the sensation of heartbeat, increasing pulse, increasing blood pressure.
On the side of the central nervous and peripheral nervous system may appear anxiety, anxiety, involuntary muscle contractions, sense of numbness of the skin, disturbance of gait. Sleepiness, fainting, headache, dizziness, hand shaking, insomnia, hallucinations, nightmares, reduced sexual drive may occur.
In overdose, serotonin syndrome occurs, which is manifested by drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, tachycardia, psychomotor arousal, increased sweating.
On the side of the respiratory system possible appearance of bronchospasm, yawn. On the side of the urinary system: urinary incontinence or its delay. On the part of the senses: visual impairment, appearance of ringing in the ears.
