Childhood and adolescence
In often it happens that relatives and loved ones do not share the hobbies of a young person. Zurab Lavrentyevich Sotkilava came to light on March 12, 1937 in an intelligent family. The parents resided in the famous city of Sukhumi. His father taught history at one of the city’s schools. The mother worked as a radiologist doctor at the hospital. There were no sightings among close relatives of professional athletes or art figures. The boy grew inquisitive and energetic. In those years, boys in all corners of the Soviet Union were fond of football.
Nor was the rising Zurab an exception. He was bought a soccer ball back in preschool age. And when it came time to go to school, he started working in the football section with great desire. Simultaneously, Grandma enrolled a small football player in music school. The fact is that Mom and Grandma played guitar and sang Georgian folk songs and romances very well. Zurab was very often seated nearby and sang. He sang and did not see in it any serious consequences for himself and others. He definitely linked his future only to football.
Creative activity A
versatile gifted person does not always manage to make their own choice the way of life. As a youth, Sotkilava glittered on the football field. At sixteen, he was accepted into the Sukhumi Dinamo squad. After three years, Zurab led the Georgia youth team, and the team won the USSR championship among youth teams. To the great dismay of fans and coaches, in 1959 Sotkilava completed his sporting career. The reason for this forced decision was a severe ankle injury.
It is important to note that the young man did not become depressed. Zurab entered the Tbilisi Philharmonic Hall and began to engage in vocals with his peculiar persistence. Educators found his voice sparse in timbre — lyrical-drama tenor. As a fourth-year student, Sotkilava took part in the contest of musicians and performers of Transcaucasia and won first place. After graduating from the conservatory two years he completed a two-year internship at the famous Italian theater “La Scala”. Zurab Sotkilava performed not only on the stage of his native theatre, but toured extensively abroad.
Recognition and personal life
The performer of opera parts served for many years in the company of the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre. For his great contribution to the development of domestic culture, he was awarded the honorary title “People’s Artist of the USSR”. The opera singer was awarded the highest orders of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Georgia.

Zurab Lavrentievich loved spending his free time with his grandson and granddaughter. The great singer died in September 2017 after a serious prolonged illness.
