Starting conditions The
future professor and author came to light on July 13, 1932 in the ordinary Soviet family. Parents at that time lived in the famous city of Zaporozhye, which is spread on the banks of the Dnieper River. His father worked in a steel company. The mother worked as a therapist at the city hospital. Victor grew and developed without particularly standing out among his peers. When the war broke out, the father left for the front, and the mother and son were evacuated to the Siberian city of Novokuznetsk. Here soon came also the head of the family who received heavy mutilation in fights — to him torn off his hand.
After the victory, the Berkowskys returned to their homeland, and Victor continued his schooling. In 1950, with the matriculation certificate in his hands went to Moscow to receive higher education at the Institute of Steel and Alloys. After five years, the chartered specialist returned home and started working in a steel company. It was during this period that he began to master the technique of playing seven-string guitar and compose songs on poems by famous and not very famous poets. In 1962 he moved to the capital and went to graduate school. He defended his PhD thesis and stayed at the department to lecture students.
Victor Semenovich had no special musical education, but he was considered one of the prominent melodists of the twentieth century. He managed to harmoniously combine teaching and scientific activities with musical creativity. His songs, once flying from the stage to the hall, were immediately remembered, picked up and very quickly became folk. An example of this would be “On a Distant Amazon”, “Nightroad” or “Alma Mater”. Mikhail Svetlov’s remarkable poems “Grenada” were put to music many times, but only Berkovsky’s melody became popular. He had musical hearing from God and generally talented was in everything he was engaged in.
It is important to note Berkowski’s desire to perform songs together. In the company of friends at a table or duo on stage. In the future, this feature led to the creation of the Bardov project “Songs of Our Century”. It is natural that Viktor Semenovich became its artistic director. This project lives today. And will live while at least one Russian bard is alive.
