“Rooster Hamburg”: meaning and history of the origin of the phrase

A motion picture with a winged phrase

Most citizens of the USSR first encountered the expression “cock Hamburg” after the release of the motion picture “Gentlemen of Luck”. The main character of the film comedy, who was masterfully played by actor Evgeny Leonov, having appeared in a prison cell, began to use blat jargon. In threats to his cellmates, he used this phrase as well.

The creators of the film felt that thieves and entrenched criminals should communicate among themselves precisely with the use of prison jargon. Many phrases have been voiced in the film, which have become winged. However, only a few of them received the decryption. For example, the word “radish” meant “bad man”, “rope” – “run away”, “gop-stop” – robbery. But the expression “rooster hambursky” remained without explanation.

Many people tended to the phrase being a fabrication of the creators of film comedy. However, the given misconception was debunked by the film’s director Alexander Grey. He stated that the script of the film was based on the prison vocabulary known at the time.

Meaning of the expression

According to the “Dictionary of Russian Argo”, the winged phrase means “pyjon, a fashionable man who follows his appearance, but also becomes familiar with it”. The “Big Dictionary of Russian Speakers” treats the expression as “a nimble, jumpy guy”.

Also highlight the religious version of the meaning of the known phrase. The expression “rooster Hamburg” is commonly used in Judaism, but it is known only to a few dedicated.

In Judaism, the bird in question was regarded as kosher (i.e., suitable from the position of religious canons) food. According to ancient legend, it was in Hamburg that the controversy surrounding the famous rooster was ignited.

One day during butchering, one of the birds found themselves devoid of heart. It was from a row out case. In the end, a heated argument arose between the two rabbis as to whether the “heartless” bird could be considered kosher. And the rabbi who cut the rooster claimed that the heart of the bird originally had, but was lost somewhere in the process of butchering.

The dispute has received massive publicity. He was joined by a lot of knowledgeable specialists. Physiologists claimed that cases were known where birds could live fully without a heart. The fact is that his role could be taken by other bodies.

On this version and the dispute was finished. The bird was recognized as kosher, and the situation became world famous. Often, the expression “rooster Hamburg” now denotes a controversial situation. And after time so began to call people who expose themselves.

Features of roosters of the Hamburg breed and the history of their derivation

Hamburg roosters were famous from deep antiquity. They have occupied a niche in the global market as one of the most productive breeds. These birds have a beautiful appearance. Their color palette is impressive: white, black, golden, blue, spotted, mottled.

For individuals of this breed is characterized by a proud gait. The back of these roosters is stat. In behavior, it is worth noting increased aggressiveness. Often they were raised as ornamental birds, which were then shown at exhibitions.

It was the appearance and behaviour of birds that played a major role in what people boasting about their appeal began to be referred to as “Hamburg roosters”.

The chickens of the Hamburg breed are famous not only for their beautiful appearance, but also for their performance. Unlike the negative meaning of the expression “rooster Hamburg”, the birds themselves have an excellent reputation among their associates.

The breed was bred by Hamburg burgomaster Karl Friedrich Petersen. As a result of years of experiments on cross-breeding of different breed turkeys, geese, chickens and ducks, there was an unpretentious, cold-resistant species of roosters, distinguished by high taste qualities. Meat of birds of this breed practically does not need heat treatment. The liver of these roosters is especially tasty, from which a local dish called “Hamburg pate” is prepared.

Born Petersen in Hamburg in 1809. After school he studied at the University of Göttin on a legal profile. In addition, the young man was fond of biology and selection, which was becoming increasingly popular at that time.

In 1830, after completing his studies at the university and completing his internship in Paris, Petersen returned to his homeland. He took up the practice of law, taking an active part in public life. However, all his spare time (which he had extremely little) the young man preferred to devote to his youthful infatuation — breeding. Few people were aware of this activity up to a certain point.

It was

rumored that Petersen even tried to cross hedgehog with ouge. He even had some good results, but soon this idea was abandoned. The man caught fire with the idea of breeding along the banks of the Elbe ducks. Its purpose was to bring out a new breed, whose meat would be soft and would not give away a specific smell of silt. The first acceptable results were not obtained until ten years later.

However, the unforeseen soon happened. In May 1842, a large-scale fire destroyed not only the cultural center of the city, but also including the breeder’s house together with the results of his many years of work.

For Petersen, it came as a terrible blow, but he found in himself the strength to start things from scratch. Another two dozen years it took him to bring out a breed called the “Hamburg duck”. The bred breed of domestic birds spread to the people of Hamburg, renamed the “Hamburg rooster”.

Grateful townspeople erected a monument in honor of burgomaster naturalist. In addition, they originated the custom during big holidays to put in the hand of the monument an item resembling a chicken egg in color and appearance.

advantages and disadvantages of the birds of the Hamburg breed

The Hamburg birds are characterized by unpretentious content and diet. Chickens of this breed are excellent laying trees.

Since birds have miniature sizes, they do not feed much. These individuals have persistent immunity to infections, so if you keep them warm, health problems should not occur.

Hamburg chicks grow fast. At 2 months, they already have fully formed plumage.

At 4.5-5 months, chickens begin to take off. For the first year, they can please their hosts with an egg laying of about 180 pieces. In the second year, the figure is down 20%.

The disadvantages of breed should be attributed to the fact that chickens are completely devoid of maternal instinct. Therefore, for their successful breeding it will be necessary to purchase an incubator. Alternatively, eggs can be lined with chickens of other breeds. Of the downsides of the breed, it is also worth noting the fast completion of the productive period
