Biopsy can be carried out in absolutely different ways. Use different tools depending on where the research material comes from. It can be an endoscope, a thick needle, a light guide, or a common scalpel. This procedure is most often used in case of control over treatment of tumors.
Taking a right biopsy is an art that requires a doctor to have skill and experience. The doctor can prescribe a biopsy of absolutely any organ (bone tissue, bone marrow, breast, endometrium, liver, renal tissue, lung, muscle tissue, lymph nodes, nerves, skin, thyroid, ovarian tissue, etc.).
This procedure does not require special training from the patient, is carried out in outpatient conditions. Before performing a surgical biopsy, the doctor may request to stop taking certain drugs. Eight hours before the biopsy, you can’t take liquid and food. Patients who receive insulin injections should consult a doctor. Inform the specialist about all medications taken, suffered recently diseases, the presence of allergies to certain anesthetics.
In puncture biopsy, a needle is used to extract a tissue sample. The needle is several centimeters long, the cylinder of the syringe itself in diameter usually does not exceed two to three centimeters. The area of needle administration is anesthetized with local anesthetic (when biopsy is performed to young children, the doctor can prescribe anesthesia). A hollow needle is injected into the problem area, allowing the material to be captured for research. Often puncture biopsy is performed under the control of ultrasound, CT or MRI. After this procedure, the bleeding is stopped with the help of a pressure bandage, the patient can return home on the same day.
If the site of pathological change is in a difficult place, then a surgical biopsy may be required, which is carried out in the operating room. Anaesthesia or local anesthesia will help cope with pain. The presence of a surgeon is required to fence a tissue sample. A small incision is made on the purified and decontaminated problem area. To determine the area of inflammation and the location of the tissue fence, the doctor uses a tool equipped with a small video camera. After removing the material, the cut is closed with brackets or seams, and the bandage is applied on top. The doctor prescribes painkillers.
